Winter roots kicks off with a respectful look at The Grateful Dead songbook.
Chalk full of originals from the team of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter with contributions from other members of the group, most notably the team of Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow, The Grateful Dead songbook was deep in folk and blues traditions drawing on inspirations ranging from Jesse Fuller and Howlin' Wolf to Elizabeth Cotten and Marty Robbins.
There will no doubt be room made for a Dylan tune or two as Edmonton's Tacoy Ryde hit the decks with a slate of Grateful Dead tunes the band has been performing for almost as long as The Dead were in existence.
Joining Tacoy Ryde will be Alberta roots musicians such as Dave "Crawdad" Cantera who will add his harp and voice to the music of The Dead's late bluesman Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.
Also in the mix will be Calgary's J.R. Shore who recently included a great cover of the Garcia Hunter tune "Deal" on his state theatre album.
Join us for what should be an insightful and affectionate look at the songbook that continues to be a point of reference for so many young artists in the roots and jam band scenes.
